Report from the Dock – Minnesota Ice Fishing Conditions

It’s been another one of those weeks, which often happen this time of the season. Anglers across Minnesota are struggling to consistently catch walleyes, panfish, and even northern pike. Numerous reports again this week indicated that there’s plenty of fish being seen on electronics, but getting them to bite has been extremely difficult. Midday activity is especially slow, so keep on the early morning, evening, and overnight hours for crappies and walleyes.

Low-light periods of the day have also been best for bluegills, which continue to be found around remaining green vegetation (if it is available), in less than 15 feet. Crappies remain suspended over deep basin areas on most lakes in Minnesota. Ice depths and lake conditions remain in fine shape, but some accesses and shorelines continue to buckle and heave. With a stretch of warm weather expected to occur throughout this week and beyond, it’s likely that more access points could be compromised. Anglers should continue to use caution when heading out.

Leech Lake Ice Fishing Report – Walker, MN

On Leech Lake near Walker, MN, angler success has pretty much been the same as last week, so look for bigger perch along Greg’s Breakline and the Snake Pit area in 12 to 16 feet. The majority of walleyes on Leech Lake continue to be caught at night on main lake structure and the Snake Pit in 14 to 18 feet or 20 to 24 feet. Tullibees and some whitefish are being found suspended over the deep water off Stoney Point – look for 30 feet or more.

Report from the Dock

With a shot of cool air last week and another significant cold front moving through the state this week, water temperatures have started to dip. While we’re nowhere near full fall fishing patterns, some signs have started to develop. Minnows, especially large minnows, are now producing more walleyes, and slower presentations seem to be most productive; it doesn’t matter if you’re working minnows, crawlers, or glide baits such as Jiggin’ Raps. There were quite a few reports also indicating that crappies are starting to pull off the weeds and be suspended over deep basin areas, which they typically do during the fall. Bluegills, bass, and pike all remain weed-related, but like last week, deep weeds are, in most cases, producing bigger fish. Muskie reports have amped up a bit, but there have been more anglers targeting them with the cooler weather. Once the front moves through mid-week, fishing should only get better.

Leech Lake Fishing Report

A jig and crawler or crankbaits are producing walleyes in the Snake Pit over 9 to 11 feet and on the Annex in 13 to 16 feet. Throw bucktails around the 5- to 9-foot weeds in Portage Bay for muskies, while the 6- to 9-foot cabbage in Boy Bay and Sucker Bay has been best for panfish and largemouth bass.

Report from the Dock

“Fall” arrived in late August last weekend, with cool air and strong winds moving through the state. That meant a little bump in the road with many walleye bites as water temperatures took a tumble. Generally, there was a period of inactivity and fewer anglers out chasing walleyes with last weekend’s weather, but the spots that produced fish before the front should light up again with some stable weather; this weekend looks excellent for fishing. Bluegills and crappies have been biting more consistently and seem to have been less affected by the sudden change in weather. Bigger panfish seem to be relating to deep weedlines, deep weed flats, or deep rock on most lakes. Bass fishing, both for largemouth and smallmouth bass, remains excellent across the state. Again, deep rocks and weedlines are holding bigger fish, and plastics continue to dominate for both species. Muskie anglers are seeing more fish than they’re hooking.

Leech Lake Fishing Report

A spinner and crawler, slip bobber rigs, or crankbaits are turning walleyes in Portage Bay over 13 to 16 feet. There have also been fish being caught around Bear Island, Annex, and Stoney Point in 14 to 18 feet. Bucktails remain the best option for muskies on the 8- to 12-foot rocks and sand. Largemouth bass and panfish remain active in the 6- to 9-foot cabbage and rice bed edges in most bays.

Report from the Dock

There was a bit more inconsistency in many walleye reports this week, and most anglers are blaming it on the constant weather fronts that have pushed through the state. In most areas, anglers have been grinding out bites with a spinner and crawler or crankbaits, or they’ve been finding pods of fish and throwing jigs and slip bobber rigs with crawlers on top of them. Deep weedlines and structure have been most productive, although a handful of reports did indicate that pulling crankbaits at night in less than 10 feet has started to produce walleyes as well. Deep weeds and rocks have also been producing bigger panfish- bluegills during the day and crappies each evening on top. You’ll find plenty of sunfish in shallow weeds during the day as well, but the pods of bigger fish are relating to deeper structure. The same is true for bass and bike: plenty of shallow fish, but there’s usually better quality deep.

Leech Lake Fishing Report

Crankbaits, such as Hot-N-Tots, or a jig and crawler, are turning walleyes on the Annex in 14 to 16 feet or Snake Pit and Greg’s Breakline in 12 to 14 feet. Active muskies are shallow, chasing bucktails on the 3- to 6-foot rocks, and the key to hooking fish has been to burn these baits extremely fast. The 6- to 9-foot cabbage in Boy Bay, Sucker Bay, and Steamboat Bay is worth hitting for bluegills and largemouth bass.
