Autumn in northern Minnesota is a magical time of year. The crisp air, quiet trails, and calm lakes make it the perfect season to hop on your bike and explore. Here are the top five biking trails you won’t want to miss!

Heartland State Trail

Distance: 27 miles from Walker to Park Rapids •  Paved

If you’re looking for the perfect fall bike ride, the Heartland State Trail should be at the top of your list. This 27-mile stretch winds through the beautiful Chippewa National Forest, where you’ll pedal past quiet woodlands and glittering lakes while keeping an eye out for deer, loons, and other local wildlife.

The fully paved trail makes it a great choice whether you’re riding with kids or just want a comfortable, easygoing adventure. Come mid-October, you’ll have the trail mostly to yourself; the summer crowds have thinned out, the air is crisp and cool, and the forest puts on its spectacular autumn show. It’s hard to beat for a peaceful day on two wheels.

Paul Bunyan State Trail

Distance:120 miles from Brainerd to Lake Bemidji • Paved

Minnesota’s longest bike trail is quite the adventure. The Paul Bunyan stretches for 120 miles through forests, wetlands, and along some truly gorgeous lakes. You don’t have to tackle the whole thing; plenty of folks just pick a favorite section for an afternoon ride. But if you’re feeling ambitious, it makes for an amazing multi-day trip. Fall riding here is absolutely magical, with cooler weather, fewer people on the trail, and nothing but the sounds of nature around you.

North Country National Scenic Trail (Cass County section)

Distance: Various distances • Natural forest paths

Now here’s something for the more adventurous riders. The North Country Trail is part of a massive 3,200-mile trail system that spans multiple states, and the Cass County portion that winds through the Chippewa National Forest is a real gem. These are natural forest paths, so you’ll want a mountain bike or something with good tread. The payoff? Incredible forested trails, stunning lake views, and the kind of quiet solitude that’s hard to find these days. Perfect for fall mountain biking when you want to get away from it all.

Soo Line North Trail

Distance: 52 miles through Cass County • Natural surface

The Soo Line North offers one of the most authentic wilderness experiences you’ll find on two wheels in northern Minnesota. This 52-mile trail winds through Cass County before reaching the community of Cass Lake, with much of the route cutting right through the heart of Bowstring State Forest. There’s something magical about pedaling through dense forest canopy where the only sounds are your tires on the trail and maybe the call of a loon in the distance. Wildlife sightings are practically guaranteed; deer, black bears, eagles, and countless other creatures call this forest home, and you’re likely to spot them as you ride through their territory. Thanks to Cass County for providing access to this gem and to the Eagle Country ATV Club for keeping it in great shape. It’s the kind of trail that reminds you why northern Minnesota is such a special place to explore by bike.

Mi-Ge-Zi Trail

Distance: 19-mile paved loop • Chippewa National Forest

Named for the Ojibwe word meaning “bald eagle,” the Mi-Ge-Zi Trail is a stunning 19-mile paved loop that showcases some of the best scenery in the Chippewa National Forest. This well-maintained trail takes you along the shores of both Pike Bay and Cass Lake, offering gorgeous water views and excellent opportunities to spot the trail’s namesake bald eagles soaring overhead. What makes this trail especially convenient is its multiple access points where you can start from the Forest Supervisor’s Office, Cass Lake Wayside Rest Area, Norway Beach Recreation Area, or the South Pike Bay picnic area, making it easy to customize your ride length or explore different sections. Whether you tackle the full loop or just a portion, you’ll be cycling through pristine forest with those classic northern Minnesota lake vistas that make every mile worth it.

Cycle Through Northern Minnesota This Fall

Exploring northern Minnesota by bike in the fall is a unique way to experience its natural beauty in the Walker area. From paved forest paths to rugged scenic trails, there’s a biking adventure for everyone. Pack your bike, enjoy the crisp autumn air, and pedal through the serene landscapes around Leech Lake this October, The Original Up North.

Leech Lake is a favorite spot for fishing in Minnesota, with over 102,948 acres (160.5 square miles) and 600 miles of shoreline. With a variety of fish to catch, it’s a great place to make the most of the season. If you’re planning an ice fishing trip to Leech Lake, here are the top fish to look for and some tips to help you catch them!

1. Walleye

Walleye is the crown jewel of Leech Lake and a favorite among ice anglers. Known for their delicious, flaky white meat and elusive nature, they provide an exciting challenge.

Where to Find Them:

  • Target walleye near sandy flats, drop-offs, and points. Look for depths between 12 to 20 feet, particularly in Walker Bay and Sand Point.
  • During January ice fishing, walleye often roam mid-lake humps and underwater structures.

Ice Fishing Tips for Catching Walleye:

  • Use jigging spoons tipped with a minnow head for best results.
  • Fish during the early morning or late afternoon when walleye are most active.
  • Utilize electronics; flashers, sonar, and underwater cameras to pinpoint their location and adjust your bait accordingly.

2. Yellow Perch

Yellow perch thrive in Leech Lake and are a popular target for their abundance and tasty fillets. They’re also an excellent choice for beginners and families looking for a fun day on the ice.

Where to Find Them:

  • Look for perch in shallower waters around 6 to 12 feet, especially near weed beds or mud flats.
  • Try the bays. Areas like Agency Bay and Steamboat Bay often yield great results.

Ice Fishing Tips for Catching Perch:

  • Use small jigging lures or dropper rigs with waxworms or minnows.
  • Keep moving until you locate an active school, as perch tend to roam in groups.
  • Once you find them, drill multiple holes in the area to stay on top of the school.

3. Northern Pike

For anglers seeking a thrilling fight, northern pike are a must-target species. These monsters are abundant in Leech Lake and can grow to impressive sizes.

Where to Find Them:

  • Focus on shallow bays and weed edges in depths of 5 to 15 feet.
  • Northern pike are often found near bait, so areas with schools of perch or smaller fish are ideal.

Ice Fishing Tips for Catching Northern Pike:

  • Set tip-ups with live bait, such as large sucker minnows, to entice these toothy pike.
  • Use a sturdy leader to prevent their sharp teeth from cutting your line.
  • Be patient; northern pike strikes can be explosive but may require some waiting. Let the winter chase begin.

Ice Fishing Safety and Preparation

Before heading out on the ice, it’s crucial to prioritize safety. Check ice thickness regularly (a minimum of 4 inches is recommended for walking), wear proper winter gear, and carry essentials like a spud bar and ice picks. Stay updated on local ice conditions by consulting Leech Lake Tourism Bureau members or nearby bait shops.

Plan Your Ice Fishing Adventure

January on Leech Lake offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature and test your skills against some of Minnesota’s finest fish species. Whether you’re after walleye, perch, or northern pike, the frozen expanse of the lake promises memories to last a lifetime. As Minnesota’s 2024 firearm deer hunting season approaches, preparation is key to ensuring a safe, successful, and enjoyable experience. From selecting the right gear to understanding firearm safety, getting ready for the season can make all the difference. Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or new to the sport, here’s a comprehensive guide to preparing for deer hunting season in Minnesota.

Essential Hunting Gear Checklist

Firearm and Ammunition

  • Firearm: Choose a rifle or shotgun that meets Minnesota’s deer hunting regulations. The most common are .243 or larger centerfire rifles for deer hunting. Northern Minnesota has some heavy brush, so a rifle can be more effective than a shotgun with slug. Some reliable go-to’s are .270, .308, or 30-06 rifles.  Always ensure your firearm is clean, in good working condition, and familiar to you.  The last thing you want is a jam or misfire when your crosshairs are on a trophy buck and your dream evaporates over a firearm malfunction.
  • Ammunition: Stock up on the best caliber or gauge for your firearm that’s suitable for deer hunting. Practice shooting before the season to confirm accuracy and function.
  • Scope: A quality scope helps in low-light conditions or for long-range shots. Adjust and zero your scope well before the season starts.

Hunting License and Deer Tags

  • Purchase your Minnesota hunting license and apply for any deer tags you need for your hunting area. Ensure you have the appropriate permits for your hunting zone and weapon choice.

Clothing and Footwear

  • Camouflage or Blaze Orange Gear: Minnesota law requires hunters to wear blaze orange or pink clothing, covering at least the upper body and head, to ensure visibility to others.
  • Warm Layers: November hunting in Minnesota can be cold! Dress in moisture-wicking base layers, insulated mid-layers, and windproof outerwear to stay warm and dry.
  • Waterproof Boots: Hunting in Minnesota often means trudging through wet terrain. Invest in sturdy, waterproof boots with good insulation for comfort and warmth.

Scent Control Products

  • Scent-eliminating sprays and scent-free soap can help mask your human scent. Deer have keen senses, so controlling your scent can increase your chances of staying undetected.

Safety Gear

  • Harness: If you plan to use a tree stand, always wear a full-body safety harness. Tree stand accidents are one of the most common hunting injuries.
  • First Aid Kit: A compact kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers should be in your pack in case of minor injuries.

Hunting Pack Supplies

  • Map and Compass/GPS: Know your hunting zone and bring tools to help navigate unfamiliar areas.
  • Knife: A sharp, sturdy knife is essential for field dressing your deer.
  • Headlamp or Flashlight: Having a reliable light source for early morning or dusk hunting is critical.

Calls

  • Consider using deer calls to attract bucks during the rut. Grunt calls, rattling antlers, or doe estrus scents can bring deer closer to your location.

Firearm Safety Tips

Treat Every Firearm as Loaded

  • Always assume a firearm is loaded, even if you’ve just checked it. Keep your finger off the trigger and safety on until you’re ready to shoot.

Identify Your Target and What’s Beyond It

  • One of the most important rules of firearm safety is identifying your target and being aware of what lies beyond it. Never take a shot unless you are certain that the area is clear of other hunters or obstacles.

Be Aware of Your Muzzle

  • Always point the muzzle in a safe direction, especially when climbing into a tree stand or crossing difficult terrain. Never point your gun at anything you don’t intend to shoot.

Unload Your Firearm When Not in Use

  • Unload your firearm when crossing fences, entering vehicles, or when you’re done hunting for the day. Safety should always be your top priority.

Wear Eye and Ear Protection

  • Protect your senses by wearing proper hearing and eye protection when firing your weapon. Repeated gunshots can cause hearing damage over time.

Preparation Strategies for a Successful Hunt

Scout Your Area

  • Spend time before the season scouting your hunting zone. Look for deer trails, feeding areas, and bedding sites. Use trail cameras to track deer activity and determine the best spots to set up your blind or tree stand.

Practice Shooting

  • Confidence in your shooting ability can make or break your hunt. Head to the shooting range to practice with your firearm. Sight-in your scope and work on shooting from different positions.

Check Regulations and Set Your Plan

  • Each zone in Minnesota may have different regulations concerning antlerless deer, firearm types, or specific hunting times. Review the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) guidelines to ensure you are compliant .
  • Plan out your hunting days, including travel time, gear preparation, and the best time to be in the field. Peak deer movement often occurs at dawn and dusk.

Stay in Shape

  • Deer hunting can require physical endurance, especially if you’re walking long distances or dragging a deer back to camp. Start conditioning your body by hiking with your gear or doing strength exercises to prepare for the physical demands of the hunt.

Prepare for Field Dressing

  • If you’re lucky enough to harvest a deer, be ready to field dress it. Watch videos or read guides on how to properly field dress and care for your meat. The goal is to cool the meat down as quickly as you can.  Bring a game bag to transport the deer from the field.

Are You Ready?

Preparing for Minnesota’s 2024 firearm deer hunting season requires time, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety. With the right gear, proper firearm handling, and thoughtful planning, you can set yourself up for a successful and enjoyable hunt. Remember that safety always comes first—both for yourself and others in the field. Happy hunting!
