By most accounts, daytime walleye and crappie activity has been extremely slow. But once the sun hits the treetops each evening, they start biting much better, and the bite seems to be continuing well into the night in many locations. There have also been more walleyes caught on setlines and bigger minnows than on jigging spoons. With good ice, the lakes have become extremely busy during the day, and that’s likely fracturing into the slow daytime action. There seemed to be an uptick in perch being caught this week as well. Most are being found on shallow sand or grass in less than 10 feet or out over mud in 24 feet or deeper, it depends on the lake. Bluegills and pike seem to be biting, although there haven’t been as many people fishing for them. As for statewide ice conditions, it’s good- the best ice and lake conditions in several years. There are some cracks and heaves to be aware of, so don’t just drive anywhere.<\/p>\n

Leech Lake Ice Fishing Report<\/h2>\n

Walleye action has been spotty, although there are some fish biting at night. Get away from the crowds, on or near structure, in 12 to 16 feet or 18 to 15 feet. The Sand Point and Cedar Point areas in Walker Bay are also giving up a few walleyes at night in 20 to 30 feet. You have to sort through your perch, but look to GrandVu Flats in 12 to 14 feet or the Olson Reef area in 25 to 30 feet for good numbers.<\/p>\n
