Report from the Dock – Minnesota Ice Fishing Conditions
There’s no question that crappies are providing the most consistent action across Minnesota. The majority of them are being found suspended over deep basin areas, generally in 20 feet or more, and they’re biting best during low-light periods and after dark. Walleyes also seem to be most active during the evening and overnight hours, but last week’s high pressure and cold weather even slowed those low-light feeding windows.
The biggest keys for catching walleyes in Minnesota right now are to keep fishing at night and get away from crowds when possible. With so much activity, trucks and wheelhouses are showing up in big numbers on Minnesota’s fishing lakes, and with limited snow cover, anglers continue to encounter spooky fish. Bluegills seem to be mostly suspended and deep, but if you find green weeds, you’ll find some in those as well. Make sure you have an auger extension, especially if you head north, you’re going to need it!
Leech Lake Ice Fishing Report – Walker, MN
On Leech Lake near Walker, MN, small spoons with minnow heads are producing better numbers of nice perch around Greg’s Breakline and Snake Pit area in 12 to 16 feet. There are northern pike and walleyes in these same spots, but most walleyes are being caught with deadsticks at night. The main lake reefs and 15- to 18-foot breaks in Walker Bay continue to produce a few eelpout, giving anglers a variety of species to target during ice fishing trips on Leech Lake.
