Leech Lake Fishing Report for January 14th, 2026

Report from the Dock

Walleye reports were somewhat thinner this week than last, and many anglers seem to blame the ever-changing weather patterns more than anything else. Plenty of walleyes are being seen on electronics, but getting them to bite has been difficult, so try downsizing your spoon sizes, implement dead sticks, and key on low-light periods or after dark. Crappie action has been solid, but there seems to be more people now fishing for them as well. Just as last week, look for suspended fish over deep basin areas on a given lake, and key on low light periods for them as well. Northern pike remain an easy catch on tip-ups and sucker minnows, while bluegill reports were limited. Generally, ice conditions are fine, and trucks are now being used across much of the state. The farther south you travel, ATVs remain the safest travel option. There are also some cracks and heaves developing in many areas with the changing weather.

On Leech Lake, perch activity continues to be best along the 10- to 14-foot weed edges, but more fish have started being caught on the mud in 16 to 18 feet. Walleye activity is nearly a complete night thing on top of structure in 6 to 10 feet or on main-lake structure in 16 to 23 feet with deadsticks. There’s been some bigger pike and eelpout in most areas as well. Check out our top fishing tips on Leech Lake in Minnesota!
