Report from the Dock

Strong winds over much of last week, combined with this weekend’s firearms deer opener, have meant that fishing activity has been limited. In addition, most anglers have now put their boats away for the year as they begin to completely focus on the upcoming deer season and other upland hunting options.

There are a few diehard anglers still venturing out, muskie and walleye folks mostly, along with a few panfish anglers looking for slab crappies. If you can find large sucker minnows, they seem to be the ticket for muskies, as are bigger minnows such as chubs, redtails, and shiners for walleyes.

Deer have definitely started moving more, even during daylight hours. There were more reports from archery hunters that bucks have been chasing does this week.

Grouse-hunting reports have mostly been favorable, maybe not as good as last year, but still decent! Ducks are slowly trickling into the state, but there are fewer people hunting them.

Fishing pressure has been even more limited over the past week, mainly due to consistent winds and the fact that most anglers have put their boats away. Work the points, flats, and shorelines in 5 to 10 feet with a jig and minnow for walleyes. Look for perch off Sand Point in Walker Bay or the Walker Narrows in less than 7 feet. Muskie reports have been best on the shallow rocks.

Report from the Dock At this point, many boats have been put in storage, which means fishing reports have been pretty light throughout the majority of the state. The few anglers still venturing out are doing well, with most chasing walleyes or muskies. Large sucker minnows continue to be the ticket for muskies, while a […]

Report from the Dock It seems as though most outdoors-minded folks have been focusing on hunting rather than fishing over the past week. The youth and early antlerless deer hunts were held last weekend, and most reports indicated success and high participation in many areas. Archery hunters are also reporting that deer have definitely started […]

Report from the Dock Reports across the state this week indicated that many boats have been put away, and fewer people are still out fishing. But those still venturing out are doing well, especially for walleyes and crappies, as those species start to slowly move into their fall locations. Water temperatures are finally starting to […]

Report from the Dock It finally happened: cool air and a switch of wind from the north has arrived and flushed out the summer-like weather that’s been hanging over the state. This is good news for anglers, albeit a bit later than normal, but water temperatures have finally started to drop. The early part of […]
